Man Yau (b. 1991) is a sculptor based in Helsinki. Her work explores “the feeling of being on display and under pressure" from the perspective of a woman and BIPOC artist.
She creates sculptures and installations that combine everyday forms with aesthetic symbols of power. Materials such as clay, silk, metal, and glass carry deep cultural meanings and emotional resonance in her work.
The first part of the exhibition, Hi-fire Dream, showcases the artist’s evolving practice. The second section presents new works from the Peep show series, which explore the theme of silent violence through sculptural forms, in which the artist’s body is transformed into “images, surfaces, and objects”.
Yau’s work has been widely exhibited in Finland, most recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and HAM Helsinki Art Museum in Helsinki, as well as internationally in the UK, Sweden and Estonia. She has participated in artist residencies in countries such as Denmark, China and Japan, and her works are included in several major public collections.
