WHEN YOU GET TO LOVE — Yle’s new 6-part documentary series about rainbow seniors in Pirkanmaa

“When it happened to me, it hit like a thunderclap — scary and shameful at the same time. Gradually, I began to realize that I wasn’t alone in the world.” When You Get to Love is a warm-hearted documentary series about the lives of rainbow seniors and the freedom to love. Couples Paavojuha (85) and Pekka (75), Hillevi (69) and Lissu (70), Tanja (64) and Sandra (48), as well as Mikko (79) who lives alone, each belong to a sexual or gender minority. We hear stories of living a double life, coming out of the closet, self-acceptance — and above all, love. The difficult experiences of the past are part of life, but the present is marked by sparkling humor, strong emotions, and the art of living in the moment.

The people in the series are familiar from Sinuiksi ry’s “Rainbow Seniors” and “Mummolaakso” peer groups as well as from the Transfeminine Association. The series was written and directed by Kirsi Marie Liimatainen, a director from Tampere.
