Laughter Through Generations is a documentary film about director Sonja
Tolonen’s relationship with her late grandmother whom she never met.
Heli’s premature death is the first thing Sonja has ever known about her
grandmother. Having grown up without grandparents, Sonja feels rootlessness
and misses a granny figure. This longing pushes her to find out who Heli
actually was. Sonja gets to know her grandmother’s life through photographs
and items that have remained, together with interviews from people who knew
her. That makes Sonja face her own expectations, hopes and fears regarding
her grandparents.
Laughter Through Generations is a story about a grandchild searching for a
grandmother and about a grandmother who never got to be a granny or a
grandma.
